Kayaking Options

Add-on a Day Trip

If you are considering the Matanuska Getaway and want the opportunity to explore the coast, this add-on option is a great way to make the most of your time!

Get geared up in the morning to enjoy the water all day. You’ll have opportunities for wildlife sightings and be able to cruise the coastlines of waterfalls and coniferous forests by paddle. Land on the shore in the evening just in time for a hearty meal. Finally,  you’ll take a short trip to our base and enjoy the comforts of your Alpenglow experience.

Three Day Kayak Tour

A day is just a taste of the sound and not nearly enough time to fully take in what the coast has to offer. Make the most of the coast on this three-day sea kayaking expedition. This trip doesn’t just get your feet wet but will have you diving into the coastal experience of a lifetime.

Have the chance to ride the scenic drive along the Turnagain Arm and through the Historic Anderson Anton Memorial Tunnel to your inlet destination. There you’ll find yourself at one of our favorite local boathouses. The outfitters here will be sure to get you what you need for the water.

On the first day you will be fitted for the necessary gear and sized to your sea kayak. You’ll be on the water after enjoying a delicious lunch on the shoreline. The days will be filled with wildlife sightings, crafting your sea kayaking skills, and reveling in the paramount views.

One afternoon is not enough to take in the immensity of this ecosystem. We highly recommend the three day to the full week tour. This gives ample opportunity to have close up interactions with wildlife and give skills to sea kayaking on the ocean. The gourmet meals and time to unwind over your adventures will be sure to create connection with your natural surroundings and Alaska’s offerings.

This trip is three days on the water and two nights of primitive camping on shorelines and in forest dwellings. On the last day we will relax with an afternoon water taxi ride back to Whittier’s port. This allows us to explore to as much as possible in the sound.

Seven Day Kayak Tour

This seven day trip will take your Alaska kayaking tour to a new level. This trip gives more opportunities to have some quality time with whales, sea otters, and coastal birds. The inlet has many gems and less explored areas to discover.

The full week excursion will give you more time to explore forested areas, chase waterfalls, and have more opportunities for wildlife sightings. Our expeditions are some of our toughest trips, so be ready to spend extended amounts of time in the back country and to physically and mentally push yourself.

You do not need to be an extreme athlete for this but do need a good awareness of the seven days of paddling and the six nights of primitive camping.

This trip ends with a water taxi ride back to Whittier’s port on the last day.

For all Alaska kayaking tours you must be 18 or older, in good physical condition and prepared for the challenges of the Alaska backcountry.

Kayaking

Kayaking in Alaska is a great way to get up close and personal with the land, water, and even the occasional critter. Imagine taking a tour, paddling across the water, and spotting a few sea otters playing nearby. There is just something about experiencing the world and smelling the crisp mountain air from a kayak.

While taking a short trip on a kayak is a great time, the overnight trips are where you get the full experience. You’ll not only get to kayak, but camp as well! Either in a forest, or along a beach, you’ll eat, drink, and enjoy the quiet. On the longer tours, perhaps you’ll even take an air taxi to reach the usually unattainable parts of Alaska’s back country. This is how everyone should be able to experience kayaking in Alaska.

If you take a tour, you don’t really need any experience to go kayaking in Alaska! As long as you are willing to put in a good paddling effort, almost anyone can do it. Even children (over 8) can hop in and have a great time on shorter trips!

Please always keep in mind that no matter where you are, kayaking is always weather dependent! Though there are protected areas, there are also areas that are affected by storms on the ocean and even flash flooding. So, make sure you are flexible! Your guides are professionals and part of their job is knowing when the water and wind are favorable. So, to ensure that you have the best time possible, while staying safe, they’ll be keeping a watchful eye.

So, whether you are a pro, or have never even touched a paddle, book a tour. Going kayaking in Alaska  on a tour is a fantastic way to experience the state. An experience you won’t soon forget.
