Description

Two whitewater boats on the shoreline of a riverWe took our popular Alaska Extreme Week and jacked up the adrenaline a little more by adding in whitewater rafting on exciting Six Mile Creek and exploring the Matanuska Glacier using a helicopter for this Xxtreme Week.

NOTE: Six Mile Creek is a very serious raft trip and can only be run at certain water levels. If Six Mile cannot be run due to high water, we will try to adjust the itinerary to include rafting on the “Lion’s Head” run of the Matanuska River.

Challenge Level: 4; Difficult backcountry travel on and off trail. May include snow, glacier and river crossings. Primitive camping. Read more about Challenge Levels.

No experience required but you must be over 18, in good physical condition and prepared for the challenges of the Alaska backcountry.

These are some of our toughest trips. You need not be a hard-core outdoors person or an athlete, and you do not need experience. But you do need to have above average fitness and be mentally tough to deal with the challenges of the Alaskan backcountry.

If you’re up for the challenge, your rewards will be great views, great memories and a real feeling of accomplishment.

Itinerary

Day 1: Meet in Anchorage, enjoy a spectacular drive and start sea kayaking from Whittier. Remote Camping.

Day 2: A full day sea kayaking in Prince William Sound. Remote Camping.

Day 3: A short paddle to our pick up point then a water taxi ride back to Whittier.  Camp near the historic mining town of Hope, Alaska.

Day 4: Whitewater rafting on Six Mile Creek.  Not for the faint of heart (or will).  This serious and exciting raft trip starts with a practice swim in the rapids and the adrenaline keeps going up from there!  Overnight at our base camp and enjoy the comforts of Alpenglow Luxury Camping.

Day 5: Explore the Matanuska Glacier! You’ll use crampons and ice axes to trek and learn to climb vertical walls of ice.  Stunning photos and a great challenge followed by another relaxing evening at Alpenglow.  Oh yeah, and instead of spending an hour or more hiking out to the best ice climbing, you’ll take a helicopter.

Day 6:  Time to pack up for backpacking.  We’ll try to move fast and light and get away from the crowds to some of our favorite spots.  With everything we need on our backs we’re free to explore.  Remote camping for the night.

Day 7: Wake up to fresh coffee with a great view in the Alaska backcountry before hiking back to the van and the return to Anchorage.
